Zainab Omosanya HST 1510 LD 01 Analytical Essay 1 Prof. Korey Bowers-Brown Trace the shift from non-racially specific indentured servitude to perpetual race-based slavery in the British North American colonies. Why did this shift occur, and what impact did the shift have on the lives of colonial inhabitants? The plantation economy in the Atlantic created a tremendous need for human labor. In the absence of machinery, human labor was required for the cultivation, planting and harvesting of the various cash crops e.g. rice tobacco and indigo. Although slavery had been existing throughout the 1600s, indentured servitude was an ancient English labor contract, it is a system whereby the servant would be at†¦show more content†¦By 1640s, slave status and racial boundaries began to harden Virginia’s planter-lawmakers moved to regulate human bondage and interracial relations (Carson pg. 48). The book also stated that as time went on, judges and legislators established precede nts that assigned Africans to lifelong slavery. The shift from non-racially specific indentured servitude to perpetual race-based slavery started as the racial boundaries and slave status became strict in legal terms, and the system of indentured servitude failed as masters did not hold up their end of the contract and subjecting servants to lifelong slavery, which later resulted in a rebellion (Bacon’s rebellion). The system of indentured servitude never took off at a good start because most of the masters did not abide by the contracts and most slaves were forced to live the better part of their lives as slaves. Anthony Johnson, a free African who acquired lands for himself and his family in Northampton County on Virginia’s eastern shore and started a tobacco plantation, who also owned a herd of cattle and hogs as well as two black servants. Anthony and his family lived in a region where slave status and racial boundaries had not yet hardened. Strengths in Writing free essay sample

My strengths in writing are being able to pick my own topic to write about. When I have prior knowledge of a topic, writing becomes easier for me. When I know what Im talking about and am interested in what Im talking about, I tend to write more. Writing poems is a good example. When writing poems, everything Just flows together for me. They dont have to rhyme, or even make sense for that matter. Poems could also be metaphors. They are your own experiences, Ideas, or emotions characterized y the use of language chosen for Its sound and suggestive power and also by the use of literary techniques. My vocabulary Is moderate I would say. I keep a dictionary close by when Im writing! When I hear new words when talking with friends and Interaction with customers at work, I repeat the word and Its definition so I will remember It. Isnt It Ironic?!I use the wonderful method they taught us In elementary school, mound out the word. But when It comes to long words with lots of confusing vowels that dont belong there, I resort to my dictionary. A dictionary cant help me out with the organization of ideas though so I organize my ideas by grouping them together into similar topics and order of importance. Grammar is most likely my strongest weakness. I never know when to change topics or how to begin or end the paper. I dont always use proper punctuation. All I can say is thank god for spell check and rammer check! Speaking in public is nerve racking for me. I think that in order to confidently give a speech you need to be confident with yourself. If Im not entirely confident with myself, Im going to wonder things such as what are they thinking of what Im saying? Do they agree or disagree? Do they understand where Im coming from? Because I am aware of my weakness, they are going to stand out more in my mind during public speaking. But we will leave my self confidence for another essay.
